Just as I am
Saturday 14 October – Sunday 15 October 2017
A weekend of events to mark our 6th annual conference on Disability and Church, a partnership between St Martin in the Fields and Inclusive Church.
Saturday 14 October 1030-1630, St Martin's Hall
Just as I am: Living Theology
What does it mean to be disabled, and what might that say about God? Do our stories tell us something about God's story? Are we living theology? Through plenary talks and in small groups, with a silent space and a marketplace, we explore the issues arising from our experience and consider how we can resource each other and the church. Organised by and for disabled people, supporters and people with an interest in disability issues.
Speakers & Contributors:
Darius Traves is a companion of the Society of St Francis and in his 3rd year studying a Theology, Mission and Ministry course with the York School of Ministry. He leads a Yorkshire-based project - coincidentally called "Just As I Am UK" - which raises awareness of disability within mainstream groups, and delivers RE based activities in Special Needs communities.
Helen Tyers Theologian, worhsip leader, social work consultant and author.
A disabled person for 30 years and wheelchair user for 20, Helen also had a stroke 2 years ago. This will be her first time out as a speaker since her stroke and miraculous recovery.
Prior to retiring from being a social work regulator Helen was recognised as a leading expert in Disabled Parents work, as high as the European Court of Human Rights. Following major discrimination in the 1990's she became a national advocate and activist for Disabled People's rights.
Recognising the need to challenge unacceptable situations in the church from a theolgical basis, Helen took a masters degree in practical and contextual theology which focussed on inclusion of disabled people in the church. She is currently co-authoring a book on theology and autism.
Other speakers and contributors still to be announced.
